Resizing databases

Scale databases up or down based on your needs.

As needs and demands change, you might need to increase or decrease the capacity of your DataStax Astra database. If a database is growing quickly or exceeding capacity, add capacity units (CU) to expand the storage and capabilities of the database.

You can increase your database by a maximum of three CUs. Multiple resize operations are required to add more CUs beyond the maximum number.

Consider the following conditions when resizing databases:
  • You must be the owner of a database to resize it.
  • Databases can only be increased in size to add more CUs.
  • Databases running on the Developer tier cannot be resized.
Tip: When viewing details for a database, click the ellipsis next to the database name to access the Resize option.

  1. Open a browser, navigate to DataStax Astra for Apache Cassandra, and log in.
  2. Click Manage via DataStax to open DataStax Astra on Google Cloud.
  3. From the Databases page, under Actions, click the ellipsis for the database you want to resize and select Expand.
  4. In the Expand Database Capacity window, enter the number of CUs that you want to add to the database.

The total amount of storage and estimated cost changes dynamically based on the number of CUs entered.

Important: You cannot modify the compute size of existing databases.
  5. Click Expand to begin resizing the database.
An estimate of the time required to resize the database displays. The database remains active while resizing, and the database status changes to Resizing.

An email is sent indicating that the database was successfully resized, including a link to the database.
