Create a database

To create a database, you must have one of the following roles:

Create a Serverless (Vector) database

  1. In the Astra Portal, select Databases in the main navigation.

  2. Click Create Vector Database.

  3. In the Create Database dialog, select the Serverless (Vector) deployment type.

  4. In the Configuration section, enter a name for the new database in the Database name field.

Because database names can’t be changed later, it’s best to name your database something meaningful. Database names must start and end with an alphanumeric character, and may contain the following special characters: & + - _ ( ) < > . , @.

  5. Select your preferred Provider and Region.

You can select from a limited number of regions if you’re on the Free plan. Regions with a lock icon require that you upgrade to a Pay As You Go plan.

Not all regions may be available. If you don’t see your preferred region listed, please submit a support ticket or send us a message using our live chat in the bottom right of the Astra Portal.

  6. Click Create Database.

You are redirected to your new database’s Overview screen. Your database starts in Pending status before transitioning to Initializing. You’ll receive a notification once your database is initialized.

Once your database is initialized, you can start loading data and connect with a client or driver.

If your database must satisfy additional availability or locality requirements, you can configure additional regions.

Create a Serverless (Non-Vector) database

  1. In the Astra Portal, select Databases in the main navigation.

  2. Click Create Database.

  3. In the Create Database dialog, select the Serverless (Non-Vector) deployment type.

  4. In the Configuration section, enter a name for the new database in the Database name field.

Because database names can’t be changed later, it’s best to name your database something meaningful. Database names must start and end with an alphanumeric character, and may contain the following special characters: & + - _ ( ) < > . , @.

  5. Enter a name for your first keyspace in the Keyspace name field.

A keyspace stores your group of tables, like a schema in a relational database. This helps keep related tables of information in a single place within your database.

Name your keyspace to reflect your data model. Use only alphanumeric characters and underscores. Keyspace names have a maximum of 48 total characters and cannot be named dse or system.
