Migrate DataStax Enterprise (DSE) 5.1 or later to Hyper-Converged Database (HCD) 2.0

You can migrate from DSE 5.1 to HCD 2.0 using the Zero Downtime Migration (ZDM) tools or an in-place upgrade.

DataStax strongly recommends using the ZDM tools for this migration. The ZDM tools provide support for blue-green deployments and seamless rollback capabilities without the need for progressive cluster reconfiguration.

Only perform an in-place upgrade if you cannot use the ZDM tools.

Upgrades are dependent upon your current DSE version and your target HCD version. The greater the gap between the current version and the target version, the more complex the upgrade. Upgrades from earlier versions can require one or more interim upgrades.

In-place upgrades are riskier or more complex due to differences between the underlying Cassandra version in DSE and the underlying Cassandra version in HCD 2.0, as well as differences in unique DSE and HCD features. Instead, DataStax recommends using the ZDM tools to migrate your data to a new, separate HCD cluster. This approach provides a seamless rollback strategy in case of data loss or corruption.

If you want to perform an in-place upgrade on your existing clusters, an intermediate upgrade is required:
