Upgrade DSE 5.0 to 6.8
Follow these instructions to upgrade from DataStax Enterprise (DSE) 5.0 to 6.7 or 6.8. This guide assumes you are upgrading to 6.8 because 6.7 is EOL.
There are extensive changes to DSE core functionality, advanced workloads, and the underlying Apache Cassandra® version between DSE 5.0 and 6.8. As a result, you cannot upgrade directly from DSE 5.0 to 6.8. Instead, follow this path:

If you installed DSE 5.1 with the DataStax Installer, you must migrate to a tarball or a package installation of the same version before you upgrade to DSE 6.8.
Support for the DataStax Installer ended with DSE 5.0.14, 5.1.10, and 6.0.

Treat each part of this upgrade path as an isolated upgrade. Complete all pre-upgrade, upgrade, and post-upgrade steps, even if they seem redundant, when upgrading from DSE 5.0 to 5.1 and again from 5.1 to 6.8. Although the general process is similar, different changes are needed for each upgrade. Specifically, there are changes to DSE advanced workloads that require significant time for planning, testing, and implementation before proceeding with the upgrade. As an alternative to an in-place upgrade on a live cluster, you can use the Zero Downtime Migration (ZDM) tools to orchestrate live traffic while you prepare a new cluster with your desired DSE version, configuration, and data. After testing the new cluster, you can redirect your application traffic and safely decommission your current cluster. If you need to rollback, you can seamlessly discard the new cluster and continue using your existing cluster.
